I was sitting in church this morning as a man from the military was called up to open the service in prayer. He was in full uniform and said a few words before he prayed that blew me away.
"Memorial Day isn’t just a barbeque day, it’s a day to remember not only the sacrifice of our families and loved ones in the service, but the families and loved ones of our enemies."
To hear someone who has fought in wars, and whose job sometimes requires him to take the lives of his enemies share a perspective of love even in that situation was amazing. To love our enemies has to be one of the most difficult callings in our lives, but we must fight against our nature and chose love over hate.
Have a great Memorial Day and thank you to those of you who protect us and our freedom.
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
